After teen Neesa (Julin) committed suicide after having been left by her boyfriend (Daniel Walker-Rice) ditched her and spent six minutes in (literal) hell before being brought back to life in hospital, her best friend Sam (Katie Bosacki) thinks it might be a good idea to take her out for a night of partying in an abandoned, creepy factory with some of her best friends (Taylor Tippins, Justin Arnold, Cameron Deane Stewart) - yeah, I know, might not sound like a particularly great idea, objectively speaking, but hey, they are teens. Anyways, somehow the fivesome find a hidden box that includes a scripture with an incantation to summon the demon Knucklebones (Tom Zembrod), with five dice-shaped actual human knucklebones that are to be used during the incantation. Of course, being teens they perform the ritual just for fun ... and enter Knucklebones - who's not just any demon but the very demon Neesa has met during her six minutes in hell, and who now seems oddly attached to her ... and that of course includes slaughtering all her friends and everybody who gets in his way in a particularly gruesome way and even going after her little sister (Mary Catherine Wells). Now somehow, Neesa learns how to get rid of Knucklebones from a bum (Jason Duffy Klemm) residing on the premises - but that's not that much help, as that ritual sounds next to impossible to perform ...

Now one has to admit, Knucklebones isn't exactly breaking new grounds story-wise - as a matter of fact, it's pretty much a standard teen-slasher, narratively, despite some rather fresh story details ... but it's also a great throwback to a time when slashers first and foremost were meant to be entertaining in their own right. So while there's some humour in this, there's no post-modern irony, the deaths are as gruesome (if not more so) and inventive as you'd want from a film of this ilk, the villain is creepy to boot, Julin makes a great final girl supported by a very competent cast, and the finale is ... well, it's just wow, actually, I don't want to give anything away, but it certainly pulls no punches and will surprise you, as will the movie's resolution.

If you're at all into slashers of the bloodier variety, definitely give this one a chance, you won't regret it!
