Forced marriage is something that most of us know from history books,
and we have a vague suspicion that it might still happen in foreign
cultures, but nobody would suspect it to be thing in contemporary USA.
This film lets three women, all forced marriage survivors, relate their
stories: Nina coming from a conservative Christian background with very
dated beliefs about the "place" of a woman, just did what she
believed right until she found out better, Sara was pretty much abducted
by her father and forced into marriage, and Fraidy, from an ultra-orthodox
Jewish background, was just expected to marry the man chosen by her
father. All of these women were underaged, and what's shocking is that
most of the US states allow underage marriages, at least under certain
circumstances, and this way cut off the victims of forced marriages from
all-important legal support ... As mentioned above, most of us
have only a vague idea what the term forced marriage encompasses, that
it's also an excuse for serial rape, in some cases also statutory rape,
teen pregnancies, a reason for lack of education and denial of free will -
something that's very well portrayed in the interviews with the film's
protagonists, in a way that chooses subtlety over spectacle, and escapes
being a mere series of talking heads by using impressive street art and
dance to properly and engagingly illustrate its spoken words - with all
adding up to a very compelling documentary.
