Delivery driver Doug (Kevin James) couldn't be happier: His wife Carrie
(Leah Ramini) promised him the basement of their Queens home as his very
private away room, and the big TV he has always wnated, has just arrived.
Then though Carrie's father Arthur's (Jerry Stiller) wife dies, and
despite being on his own, he refuses to go to a retirement home - to burn
down his house the very first night on his own. Not having had an
insurance or anything, he is left with nothing - and even though Doug
finds Carrie's father more than a little bit odd (and justifiably so), he
gives up his basement paradise to let him stay with them out of love for
his wife ... The pilot episode to one of its time's funniest
and longest running (if not most successful ) sitcoms of its time already
has all the key elements of the series in place: The uneven but loving
couple and the eccentric old man at center stage - and there's chemistry
between the three of tghem right from the beginning -, a few oddball
supporting characters who are not too exaggerated to come to life, and
funny situations and dialogues that come across sublte enough to work as
almost timeless humour. Incredibly enough, the series managed to stick to
this formuly and hardly deteriorated during its 9 seasons-run ...
