Two young soldiers return from the war, but while one, Joe Bava (Billy
Walsh), is celebrated as a war hero - and is using his newfound fame to
his advantage - the other, Dennis (James Balsamo) is given no more than a
few hours to live after being seriously wounded in an enemy ambush, and
it's said that the fact that he has returned at all is only thanks to Joe,
who has dragged him to safety during the attack. Dennis miraculously
recovers though and escapes the hospital he's in - even if that means
killing quite a few doctors and nurses. Dennis, using an American flag
as his mask, goes on a killing spree, and he usually carves patriotic
slogans into his victims's bodies or lets his patriotic agenda be known
otherwise (like dyeing the heart of one of his victims purple). But while
Dennis's choice of victims seems totally random for the untrained eye, Joe
is soon beginning to see a pattern: Dennis seems to be zeroing in on him,
killing people closer and closer to him, personally. The police comes to
an almost similar conclusion - only being unaware of Dennis's mere
existence, they think Joe is actually the killer. And Joe's almost
arrested, too, when Dennis takes care of the cop after him, then chases
him to a scrapyard for a showdown - but before that happens, the reason
for everything is revealed: Joe was by no means the war hero everybody
thought him to be but was responsible for getting himself and Dennis into
the ambush in the first place. And Dennis actually caught a bullet meant
for Joe rather heroically. Compared to that, dragging Dennis to safety was
a mere walk in the park ... Debbie Rochon in a small cameo as morally
ambiguous secretary of defense calling in a team of hitmen is great fun as
always. The beautifully titled I Spill Your Guts is not
a movie without its shortcomings: The film's story is a bit too
straightforward to qualify as a masterpiece, it features a few too many
plotholes, its (self-)irony doesn't always come through right, and the
characters are rather bland and two-dimensional and lack any real
development. But all of this only matters half as much as it should,
because what the movie lacks narratively it makes up in pacing: The events
in this movie are pushed forward so nicely and relentlessly that the story
actually takes backseat, and this is perfectly mirrored in its score -
mostly a collection of heavy metal tunes from the hardcore variety - which
is so well-integrated into the movie that it will work for you even if
that kind of music is not your cup of tea (and believe me, it isn't mine,
either). Also, there's enough violence, gore and quite a bit of nudity to
keep everyone entertained. So while this film might not be exactly the
most intellectually challenging piece of art, it's just perfect to simply lean back and enjoy the ride
