Jessica (Elise Couture) and Dan (Michael Reed) have always had a dream
- to one day run a bed-and-breakfast - and now they have found a place to
take over for pebbles that's already fully equipped, so they don't
hesitate too long ... even if the former owner, old Rose (Judith Chaffee)
freaks them out a bit, talking about "taking care of the
children" and such, but our main couple think she's just addled in
the brain. Setting up the place for operation, Jessica and Dan stumble
upon a store room full of torture contraptions and instruments, and doing
a bit of research, Jessica finds out that the place was once owned by a
witch who has been tortured and hanged in her own house - which freaks her
out a bit. In the meantime, Dan finds a fully functional CCTV system
covering the entire place, plus a bunch of voyeur tapes taken with the
in-house cameras - which freaks him out. Dan has to leave for business
for a couple of days, and when he returns, he hardly recognizes Jessica
anymore, and knows something's wrong despite her insisting everything's
alright - but while he was away, Jessica has actually found a secret
entrance into the in-house torture room from centuries ago, and has since
been possessed by the souls of the deceased children who have died in the
house, plus later on she has killed a couple of teens who were breaking in
and then hid their bodies. It's really up to anyone's guess what she has
in store for Dan - but he better think of something soon ... The
Inhabitants is a very effective little ghost story, moving ahead at a
deliberately slot pace maybe, but always building up tension and
atmosphere and keeping the audience guessing at the same time. This is
achieved not only via a very well-structured story but also a subtle yet
tense direction. And that the cast is first rate of course also helps - as
does the location that's simply great and used to full effect! Totally
worth a look!
