Four friends from all drives of life, "manly man" Sully
(Jeremy Koerner), married womanizer Pete (Bill Olson), tech-addicted Eddie
(Michael Nosé) and good-natured single Mark (Michael Fredianelli) are
going on their annual hunting trip - which means much boozing at night and
stumbling through the woods today with hardly ever seeing deer from afar
let alone shooting some. And of course it means getting cross with the
local hillbillies and picking up girls at the local boozer. But things
soon turn sour when a killer with an axe kills members of the neighbouring
hillbilly clan, and our heroes then have to fight to the death (and win)
to escape the unfounded (?) wraith of the survivors. Problem is, one of
our heroes actually is a psychopath, who wants to bring his point across,
even if that means to murder his friends ... Hunter and the
Hunted is a movie that's very good at keeping you guessing: After at
first (almost certainly deliberately) invoking memories of the backwoods
classic Deliverance, it then
steers off into many other directions until it finally seems to settle for
slasher territory - to then catch one completely off-guard in the movie's
third act. But that's not to say Hunter and the Hunted is an
incoherent mess, because quite the contrary is true: It's very cleverly
scripted and does feature fleshed out and likeable or at least relatable
characters, and kept together by a subtle yet tense directorial effort and
very solid performances. In all, a very cool genre piece!
