After numerous scrapes with the law, Kylie (Morgana O'Reilly) is put
under house arrest in her mum's (Rima Te Wiata) home, equipped with an
ankle monitor so she can't leave the premises without security officer
Amos (Glen-Paul Waru) knowing, and he's also equipped to track her down.
Now Kylie doesn't get along with her mother, never found common ground
with her mother's boyfriend Graeme (Ross Harper), and is pretty much left
with nothing to do for the next 7 months apart from fruitless therapy
sessions every other day with her therapist Dennis (Cameron Rhodes), she starts listening to the
noises of the house ... and pretty soon becomes convinced the place is
haunted. Interestingly, the only one who believes her is Amos, and he
equips the place with all kind of hi-tech ghostcatcher equipment. He and
Kylie catch no ghosts though ... but Kylie out that before her family has
moved in, the place was a halfway house in which a string of murders have
happened ... and she finds a clue to the murderer, whom she first believes
to be the creepy neighbour with a predilection for skinning rodents, then
the neighbour's agoraphobic secret son who's living in the secret basement that's
connected to Kylie's house where he walks inside the walls. As creepy as
he is though, the guy proves friendly and very fond of Kylie. But during
all of this, Kylie accidently stabs Graeme (he survives though), leaves
the house several times and it's only thanks to Amos that she doesn't get
into deep shit, and ultimately, she has to realize that the man she was
supposed to trust the most has
actually killed all the girls years back - and now he will stop at nothing
to keep this secret ... Housebound is an extremely nice
little thriller that really succeeds in taking in its audience via
imaginative storytelling more than anything else, and it effortlessly
manages to turn what starts out as your typical ghost story over into a
tight slasher movie in the course of the proceedings without ever missing
a beat. And even the film is at times extremely creepy, it also doesn't
fail to equip the story with a healthy amount of humour. And add to that a
great ensemble cast, and you've got yourself a pretty good movie.
