Ah Cheng (Chow Yun-Fat) and Chang Lei (Chang Lei) are probably the two
toughest cops on the force, and to get results, they sometimes even use
illegal means. Their job is obviously taking its toll, though, their
relationships (with Sabrina Sai and Lin Chiao-erh, respectively) suffer,
so does their family life, and ultimately they have to realize they only
have each other, are like btohers to one another. Then one of their
friends on the force (Lee sau Kei) is killed on the day of his retirement,
and that's the time when Chang Lei figures it's time to quit the force and
get his life back together. The though Ah Cheng is killed on the job, and
Chang Lei postpones his resignation to have his bloody revenge on Ah
Cheng's killers (Fung Hak On, Lu Chu Shih), two no-good street punks with
whom he and Ah Cheng had run-ins time and again ... Now this
could have been an interesting social study about the lives and hardships
of policemen and their ways of coping with their jobs, all of which is in
the film's script somehow. However, the film as a whole is not really
interested in in-depth character exploration, instead just moves from one
cliché to the next , until it culminates in a genre-standard
ill-conceived finale. Add to this a very bland directorial effort and a
low budget that very painfully shows, and you are left with nothing you
really want to watch.
