Joe (Dean Temple) wants to end it all ... but since he knows suicide
might not be the thing to do, he visits a Suicide Anonymous meeting, lead
by self-declared "suicide addict" Bill (Timothy J. Cox) ...but
that meeting doesn't exactly meet his expectations, it's just a bunch of
attention seekers out for everyone's sympathy ... and then there's Z (Andi
Morrow) - sure, she's also seeking attention, but she's the only one who
really wants to kill herself and is unapologetic about it. And she's quick
to take a fancy to Joe, and the two spend a slightly crazy but overall
awesome afternoon on a graveyard together, at the end of which Joe can't
understand why Z of all people would be so adamant to kill herself - but
she is, and urges him to give her a call when he's taking his life so they
can do it together ... and he does call, just then his sealed off car is
filling with waste gas ... Here Lies Joe is a really
nice little film that despite it's dead serious (sorry for the pun)
subject matter does not try to deliver its message in a sugar-coated way
but instead focuses on its characters and really fleshes them out -
without giving away too much about their respective motives, actually,
they're only hinted at, but enough so to make one understand anyhow. All
that is helped of course by an atmosphere-heavy directorial effort and
rock-solid performances. Pretty good, actually!
