A female hitchhiker (Christina Kostoulakos) stranded on a country road
gladly accepts a ride from the first guy who stops (Kevin Whittier),
apparently not aware that he's a serial killer who also keeps people caged
and chained up at his place somewhere in the middle of nowhere, USA. As
they're riding, he doesn't waste much time and tries to make her his ...
but she's not half the damsel in distress she appears to be, bites him in
his arm, throws him out of the car, and in the ensuing struggle, she even
manages to tear his arm off. But if you think you've figured the story out
by now, think again ... Happenstance is a really fun
genre movie that really knows how to play with audience expectations and
how to turn them on their head without coming across as totally goofy or
just to clever for its own good. Instead it delivers a story that works
well within the genre, that finds the right balance between humour, creepy
atmosphere and its fair portion of genre-immanent grossness ... and above
all, the film is great horror entertainment, too.
