When
19 year pöd Sara (Stephanie Hurley) comes to at an abandoned subway
station and finds herself face to face with a man (Daniel Grochowski) with
a gun, she immediately knows what this is about. After all, she has tried
to blackmail an US senator with enough money to hire a hitman rather than
give into her demands. And indeed, the hitman leaves her in no uncertainty
about his purpose. But rather than making it quick to get it over with or
torture her for his own enjoyment, he takes the opportunity to involve her
in a deep conversation, forcing her to question her own life choices,
drawing things out to a point where she begs him to kill her to end her
misery - but there's more to this story than meets the eye ...
Now writer/director Steve Altman sure knows how to make a thriller, he
knows how to create suspense, knows how to write sharp dialogue, and knows
what to leave out in dialogue for maximum effect. And his two leads sure
know how to deliver their lines and embody their characters. What really
makes the film though is its rather unexpected yet totally satisfying
ending that really gives everything that has previously happened a new
twist without dminishing its impact. So in all, a pretty great and rather
unique genre miniature.
