The Petersons are grief-stricken after their son has fallen in
Afghanistan ... but then enter David (Dan Stevens), his war buddy, who
claims he has just popped by to give them closure, and as a thank you they
bunk him up for a couple of days - but he is soon to win over all their
hearts, dad Spencer (Leland Orser) finds the perfect drinking buddy in
him, he helps mum Laura (Sheila Kelly) with everything there might be
without ever taking advantage of her, and he beats up those who bully son
Luke (Brendan Meyer), in a way that they are sure to learn a lesson. And
hey, even daughter Anna (Maika Monroe) thinks he's a pretty cool dude
after he had her back at a party. Problem is, he just pulls wool over
everyone's eyes, his being perfect is only an act, he's actually a
dangerous psychopath. After some of her friends who David had dealings
with are killed (by David, but she doesn't know that yet) Anna starts
investigating his army background and learns the man David is supposed to
be is dead, but her efforts to find out more are unsuccessful, as quite a
few facts surrounding "David" are classified. But information
where David is alone sets off some alarmbells within the army, and soon
Major Carver (Lance Reddick) and a SWAT team move in to capture him, as
he's apparently an army experiment gone horribly wrong - but by that time
it might already be too late for the Petersons ... The Guest
is a very entertaining little thriller that might tell the old story of a
wolf in sheep's clothing, but it does it in a surprisingly fresh way
that's helped by a very well-paced script, a
hauntingly accurate central performance by Dan Stevens, who can go from
friendly to menacing in a heartbeat of less, supported by a great ensemble
cast, well-placed gruesome bits, and of course a certain ironic approach
to its story that never gives way to the moronic though. That all said,
the film falls short of being a masterpiece as the direction comes across
as a bit too functional and impersonal, but still The Guest is a piece of
genre cinema that can be utterly enjoyed.
