Hilda (Olga Molina) just desöerately needed a jpb, so when she got one as
a nightguard at the local warehouse complex, she didn't think twice and
accepted. Though her first day on the job probably ought to be enough to
put her off, her office is filthy, half the equipment isn't functioning
properly, and the colleague who's to train her on the job, Lucas (Michael
Fredianelli) is a hopeless drunk. Plus unhoused drunks and druggies seem
to try to invade the area at regular intervals. Then again, Olga doesn't
scare easily, and even when she scares she's usually capable to help
herself, so warding off a few addicts isn't too big an issue for her, even
if they're armed. Then though she learns that the man who held the job
before her, James (Rylie Decocq), has died under mysterious circumstances,
and nobody seemed to eager to find out how. Now as she figures it might
directly affect her as well, she does tome investigations of her own, upon
which strance things start to happen at the premises that include a
mysterious woman (Sherill Quinn) wandering the complex dressed in all
white and seemingly appearing andisappearing at will, and a masked man
making several attempts on Hilda's life. That's still not enough to scare
Hilda off - but perhaps it should ...
Now true, if you're into horror thrillers of this ilk, several of
the surprise twists and reveals in this film can be guessed early on, only
to play out exactly as expected - but that doesn't make The Guard
Room a bad movie at all, rather solid genre entertainment carried
by a dynamic directorial effort that also leaves room for plenty of
atmospheric filmmaking, and a competent cast with a compelling central
performance by Olga Molina, who's mostly left to carry the film on her
own. And you combine all that, and you're very likely to find this one an
enjoyably horror ride.
