Because of some local wildfires, the ranger station is short-staffed at
the moment, so ambitious but inexperienced ranger Joan (Lauren Call) is
tasked with taking a group of hikers up to Tom's (Brandon Ray Olive) cabin
for an overnight stay. This cabin is a tourist magnet becaus each evening,
Tom and staff put out the trash to lure in grizzly bears that the guests
can watch from the cabin's balcony while feeding. Of course, this is
against park regulations - but very good for business. But that night,
long after the bears are gone, a seriouls injured guy (Matt Lintz)
stumbles in and claims a grizzly has taken his girlfriend (Brec Bassinger)
was taken by a bear. And suddenly Joan is in over her head, as such a
thing has never happened in the park, she's unarmed and there isn't a
proper weapon fit for a bear found in the whole cabin. And yet she has to
mount a rescue mission. And as this is still going on, a second girl (Ali
Skovbye) is taken by a bear, several miles away ...
Now sure, this film's first act features little to write home about,
basically presenting the audience with animal horror tropes, from the
youngsters who just want to party in the woods to the (initially)
fish-out-of-water heroine and of course a group of constantly complaining
tourists. Thing is that the film eventully drops its act, kills off the
two characters who one has fingered at final girls, drains the plot of all
irony hinted at earlier and rather than focusing on szsoebse and hzno
scares zeroes in on actual desperation. And the result is a pretty cool
genre piece, also thanks to a solid cast - and one just can't but support
the wildlife preservation message the film, that's by the way fased on real events
from back in 1967, ends with. |
