An all-girl volleyball team (Tiphaine Daviot, Manon Azem, Louise
Blachère, Camille Razat, Margot Dufrene, Anne-Solenne Hatte, Dany
Verissimo-Petit) and their coach (Artus) are on their way home from the
won championship finals when they lose their way, end up in the backwoods,
run into and pick a fight with some local hicks ... and suddenly they're
on the run as these hicks are armed to the teeth, and while they look as
if they couldn't put two and two together, they act like a well-organized
militia with a predilection for manhunt - or girlhunt more precisely, as
the coach, who looks like anything but a sports crack, is the only one to
outrun then while the girls pretty much fall one by one, and it's not at
all helped that scheming Morgan (Manon Azem) seizes the situation to stab
some of her rivals. But after running to and fro, hiding wherever, things
come to a head when the girls finally see a fighting chance in the hicks'
headquarters - but as valiant as they might fight, they are grossly
outnumbered by their enemies ...
Now my synopsis might not suggest it, but Girls with Balls,
while ticking all the boxes of a backwoods slasher and pretty much bathing
in gore, is actually a comedy - and that allows them to get away with at
least some of the overused genre tropes. Unfortunately, the humour of this
film is rather broad, and the few good jokes in there are pretty much lost
in a sea of mediocre comedy. And on top of this, even if the film allows
the girls to bicker plentifully, all the characters remain rather
two-dimensional throughout, lack any and all depth and for that are not
really relatable. A bit of a pity, really, as backwoods horror would
offer itself to some awesome comedy for sure.
