Professor Goodman (Andy Nyman) is pretty much a professional skeptic,
debunking ghost stories wherever he can find them - and he's very good at
that, too! And thus it's an absolute delight for him when he's contacted
by Charles Cameron (Leonard Byrne), a legendary skeptic who has always
been Goodman's idol. But Cameron isn't the legend Goodman expected him to
be but a frail man close to dying who sets Goodman up with three
paranormal cases he himself could never solve: One's about a night
watchman (Paul Whitehouse) being scared shitless in an abandoned hospital,
one's about a youngster (Alex Lawther) having taken his parents' car for a
spin and run over someone (or something), which haunts him to this very
day, the last being about a wealthy man (Martin Freeman) who has a ghostly
vision just when his wife dies of childbirth in hospital. Now rather
disappointingly, none of these three stories pose any real challenge to
Goodman. Sure, he cannot "disprove" them as such, but the oral
account Goodman gets in all three cases is not enough proof that anything
happened to begin with. Thing is, when he confronts Cameron with this,
this doesn't turn out the triumph he expected it to be, instead he's
confronted with his own fears - which are scarier than any ghost story ... Ghost
Stories for sure is a very clever little movie, as it, on both a
narrative and directorial level, understands how to play with genre
expectations and genre mainstays. Now basically, the set-up of the movie
is nothing short of a clichée, and the three ghost stories told are a tad
short on originality and while well-told lack proper pay-off - only for
everything to be turned onto its head in the finale and leave the audience
properly creeped out. And of course, a very fine ensemble cast doesn't
hurt one bit here. Definitely worth a look!
