Dan Marro might not be a professional ghost hunter, but he does have an
interest in the paranormal, so when he gets a chance to investigate the
Burlington County Prison, a now abandoned but once overcrowded prison
famous for its executions by hanging which is now known for being one of
the most haunted places in all of the USA, Dan gathers a bunch of
like-minded friends (Joe Carruolo,
Chris Deptula, Michelle Hannon, Beverly Hannon) to check out the place,
armed with plenty of ghosthunting equipment (and of course cameras for us
all to follow their exploits). Their first night in Burlington County
Prison turns out to be a phenomenal succes, the EMF-detector (eletro
magnetic field detector) reacts like crazy, as if a ghost tried to get
into contact, certain anomalies are caught on camera that might suggest
ghosts, but best of all, there's something caught on a voice recorder that
sounds like someone shouting in an unnatural voice telling them to get
out. Our ghosthunters are thrilled, so they return a few days later and
even bring a new teammember, Trish Lescas, along for a new perspective ...
but night number 2 is a letdown: First the voice on the voice recorder is
pretty much proven to be human-created, then the EMF decoder won't show
any reaction, and despite visiting some of the place's most creepy cells,
absolutely nothing scary happens. Later, when evaluating the tapes from
the night, Dan Marro finds a few anomalies on camera that
"might" suggest something paranormal, but the evidence is very
feeble, and even one of the group, skeptic Chris Deptula, totally refuses
to accept this as anything but perfectly natural phenomena ... As
a pure depiction of a ghost hunt, Ghost Hunt: Paranormal Encounter at
Burlington County Prison might be a bit of a letdown, and it will most
likely not convince one single soul of the existence of ghosts - but when
it comes to the phenomenon of ghost hunts as such, the film is almost
priceless, as it documents not only some of the methods used to track down
ghosts but also the danger of a ghost hunt coming up with, well, nothing.
And while Dan Marro might be a guy who wants to believe a bit too much to
really see the truth, it was very eye-opening and honest of him to include
the final discussion, where Chris Deptula debunks pretty much all proof
for a ghost sighting in the final reel - and again, that may be part of a
ghost hunting experience, that you're so eager to come up with something
that you see things that aren't there. Mighty interesting documentary
overall.
