In a fit of madness, a man tears up an enigmatic - and enigmatically
conceived - painting, and trying to restore it to its original form like
one would a puzzle, he finds himself being sucked into a strange world
where the logic of nightmares seems to prevail, and where he eventually
ends up skinned alive - which by no means kills him ... Now
much of what happens in The Forbidden is up for interpretation,
which I've only tried to the point of recounting the story, as this is a
mostly abstract and/or surreal movie - that's rather fascinating in itself
using unusual and eclectic imagery (including animation) to tell its
"story" and putting an emphasis on its own weird atmosphere. What
will make this movie interesting to horror fans especially though as it
was directed by Clive Barker nine years before he directed one of the
horror film of the 1980s, Hellraiser,
and despite The Forbidden hardly being a horror flick in the
traditional sense of the word, the similarities are rather striking: It's
about a puzzle that draws you into a hellish place, about a man sucked
into that world being skinned alive in the process, patterns of nails
(this time though not in a man's head), plus the shifting
lights used in The Forbidden extensively have in Hellraiser
and its sequels become the sign that the doors to hell have opened. And
I'm sure the dedicated Clive Barker fan can and will find many more
similarities. So oddly enough, this is a film for the art crowd and the
horror fanbase alike ...
