Asian cinema of the martial arts kind didn't really make an impact
until the 1970, starting with Bruce Lee and his (short series of hits, and
in the 1970s and 80s, it was mainly a string of pulpy B-pics that wound
their way to our shores, and to the grindhouses and video rentals mainly,
where genre reigned over star power - but of course the genre had its
stars, like Bruce Lee of course, his many clones, Jackie Chan, and of
course Cynthia Rothrock - who's also the host of this movie, and who
displays some of the skills she has become famous for and is a charming
enough hostess, leading to several subsections of vintage movie trailers
with headers like femmes fatales, bruceploitation, martoal arts weaponry,
guns vs. fist, one man army of revenge, and bizarre brawlers.
Basically, you might have seen quite a few of the trailers in
this collection before, even some of the movies (I know I have), but
that's somewhat besides the point, as Fists of Fury is actually
first and foremost a reminder why these movies of the Far East, even if
not top of the crop, were quite so enjoyable, with all there eccentric
fight scenes, bizarre weapons, weird plotlines and exotic settings were
quite so enjoyable - they succeeded to take genre cinema to a level
unheard of in the west, would constantly surprise one, and even some of
the less polished movies had an air to them that would attract to
cineastes with a predilection for the weird.
