Folk tales of old are a very potent and yet under-tapped source for
horror movies - and my guess it Ant Timpson and Tim League, producers of
this movie, must have thought just the same when they collected genre
directors from all over the world to let each of them tell a piece of
supremely macabre tale of local folklore. Thus this film consists of an
octet of macabre little stories with strong moral subtext that include
infanticide, loss of innocence, alive skinnings, abductions of all sorts
and of course a plethora of demons. And the outcome is a rather
fascinating movie that combines the exotic with the mundane and plays
strongly on primal, even primitive fears, often using archaic narratives
to do so. And while the filmmakers come from all four corners of the
earth, what unites them is they all use strong imagery to bring their
respective points across. A really very powerful anthology!
