Mute Countess Irina Karlstein (Lina Romay) is a vampire from the sunken
empire of Atlantis, and in the here and now, she roams the countryside,
dressed only in boots, a belt and a cape, looking for humans - men and
women alike - to seduce, plreasure orally and in the process suck them dry
of their hormones and kill them. She has just arrived on the island of
Madeira an hour ago, and she already has killed an innocent farmer (Roger
Germanes), later she sucks dry a nosy female journalist who thinks she's
on her trail, her hotel's masseur (Raymond Hardy) and a sadistic Princess
(Monica Swinn), who planned to torture her to death - but when Irina
hypnotized her servant (Alice Arno), the tables were turned on the
Princess ...
There are two men though who are - independently from each other - on
her trail: the coroner Dr.Roberts (Jess Franco), who seems to be the only
one who believes that vampires are responsible for the latest killing
spree, and the romantic poet/philosopher Baron von Rathony (Jack Taylor)
who is looking for fulfillment in her. Soon enough, Irina and Rathony fall
in love, but she doesn't want to consume their love because that would
mean to consume him as well - until he tells her that that's what he
actually wants ... and thus he dies of course.
Doc Roberts meanwhile has turned to blind Dr.Orloff (Jean-Pierre
Bouyxou), an expert in parapsychology and occultism for help, and
ultimately Orloff calls her back to her own dimension, and she exits this
world masturbating in a bathtub filled with blood ...
Sure the film's story is silly as hell, and the film is as sleazy as I
made it sound to be, maybe even more so (in my opinion it's just one step
away from hardcore) - yet at the same time it's a masterpiece of lyrical
horror. Its deliberate slow pace, Jess Franco's overuse of the zoomlense
and his steadily moving camera, and his interesting lighting techniques
all give the film an otherworldly, darkly romantic feel that makes the
film a masterpiece of horror erotica that is quite unlike every other
horror/sexflick. And by the way, Jess Franco regular Lina Romay - who was
19 when she starred in this one -, who in later films took a bit to the
heavy-boned side, looks absolutely gorgeous in this one, and I mean absolutely
gorgeous.
Definitely recommended.
