When he climbed up the powerline as a kid & got a full electric
discharge of circa 80.000 V, he was surprisingly not killed, instead
gained supernatural strength & the ability to speak to reptiles.
However, his strength always got him into trouble, & subsequently he
spent most of his tiem in experimental labs, where he was treated
to more & more electric shocks ... which only increased his
strength - but then he found an electric guitar, & learned to control
his aggressions plaing the instrument.
Today he is known at Dragon Eye Morrison (Tadanobu Asano), & he
lives in an appartment with countless lizards & spends his way playing
teh guitar ... until of course Thunderbolt Buddha (Masatoshi Nagasi) finds
him, & challenges him to a duel. & in Thunderbolt Buddha, who
always hides the right side of his face behind a Buddha-mask, Dragon Eye
Morrison might have found his match, since Thunderbold Buddha was charged
up by lightning.
Soon enough the 2 engage in mortal combat & hit each other with
bigger & bigger electric discharges, until ultimately Dragon Eye
Morrison blows up his opponent ... & goes home to live with his
lizards.
Electric Dragon 80,000 V boasts some incredibly stylish (if
grungy) images, often reminiscent of avant garde cinema, the French
Nouvelle Vague, Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo-films & rock
video clips alike.
However, the cool imagery cannot really hide the fact that the film has
as good as no story to speak of nor does it manage to create a
fascinatingly absurd world like abov- mentioned Tetsuo-films,
that would make up for its (lack of) plot. Ít's really just about 2 guys
fighting & trying to electrocute each other in the process.
& while for a while this may seem cool & everything, ultimately
the movie just leaves you empty.
