Desperate to find her long-lost husband Allan (Charles Bickford), Linda
(Rose Hobart) goes deep into the jungles of Borneo, facing many a jungle danger
before reaching the fabulous kingdom of Marudu, where Allan is the physician of
the Prince of Marudu (Georges Renavent).
There she is enthusiastically welcomed by the Prince. while her hubby
proves to be less excited - in fact he is so drunk he hardly recognizes her at
all. It turns out he has left her years before on grounds of jealousy, and now has no desire to get her back. The Prince on the other hand is totally
fascinated by her, and at first she is charmed, but when she sees him having
one of his prisoners thrown to the crocodiles, she changes her opinion about
him.
However, now the prince is no longer prepared to let her go and forces her
to prolong her stay. But by now of course Allan has found his love fopr Linda
again and together they try an escape, that leads them over a crocodile
infested river, but only into the clutches of the Prince's natives.
Disappointed by Allan, his erstwhile ftriend, the Prince decides to throw
him to the crocodiles, and when Linda tries to use all her seductive cherms
on him to persuade him otherwise, he is only disappointed by her ... and that's when she shoots him -
and is arrested by the natives as a consequence.
With his dieing breath, the Prince calls for Allan, who only agrees to help the
Prince if he sets Linda free, but it's already too late, the neighbouring
volcano breaks out and buries all of Marudu under its lava - only Linda and Allan escape.
Much of the movie's running time is padded out with rather clichéd
dialogue, and the plot is completely predictable, however much impressive on-location footage shot by Harry Garson in
the jungles of Borneo (where he would return to in 1935 to shoot the similarly titled [but otherwise totally different] Beast
of Borneo) containing great wildlife shots, some impressive scenes of
natives having to run through a river full of a gazillion crocodiles (with
expected results), and the nice effects of the
volcano breaking out burying everything under the lava at the climax make this worthwhile after all.
