Kath (Lynn Lowry) takes her son Paul (Lucas Dunaway) and granddaughter
Lane (Scarlett Freeman) on a road trip to her sister's (Belinda Peace)
where she plans to spread her deceased husband's ashes. Now as it often is
in horror movies, they don't take the main road though but some
less-travelled backroads, and of course their car breaks down. And since
this film is set in the 1980s, they can't just call for help but decide to
walk up to the next house - where hillbilly Bo (Brian Dorton) opens them,
invites them in for dinner and proves to be the perfect host, What Kath,
Paul and Lane don't know though is a group of bunnymask wearing killers is
on the prowl, and they've been pretty active of late. And what our heroes
definitely don't know is that this group of killers is actually Bo and
family (Douglas Post jr. Amanda Feeman-Cloyd, James Higgins), and to drive
this point across, Bo has drugged his guests' food ... Now
storywise, Early Morning Calm is hardly the re-invention of the
wheel, it follows the typical route hillbilly horror movies take a
bit too closely for that - but for what it is it's actually lots of fun,
an at times quite relentless piece of horror with quite a few moments of
irony and a rather bizarre gang of killers. And leading an able ensemble,
horror icon Lynn Lowry is once again great to watch. In all, not a
masterpiece maybe, but an entertaining genre ride still.
