Swiftnick (Michael Deeks) is somewhat dissapointed that songs are
written about Dick Turpin (Richard O'Sullivan) but not him, his trusted
sidekick. So he separates from Dick and soon enough finds two children
(Adam Stafford, Julia Gambold) whom Sir John (Christopher Benjamin) holds
hostage to ensure their mother Sarah (Mary Maude) signs a deed signing
over her land to him. Thing is, on her way back from London where she
signed the deeds, Sarah is held up by highwaymen (Griffith Davies, Forbes
Collins) and escaping them falls into a river, to be rescued by Dick
himself. Now after this, there's some to and fro, but ultimately the kids
are re-united with their mother, Swiftnick and Dick make up again, and Sir
John is thrown into the river.
It's hard to dislike an episode of Dick Turpin,
as all the regulars are just so good, and the swift pace and ironic tone
pretty mjuch draws one in rather naturally - and yet, this entry is just,
well, not good. Now all above is still true for this episode, it's just
that the writing's really bad, there's little character motivation, too
much is left to pure chance and key plotpoints are not worked twards. That
said, this one's not terrible in the literal sense of the workd, just not
among the better episodes.
