On behalf of the Crocodile Queen, who lives in an underwater kingdom,
evil warrior Banju Jagga and his army of Crocodile Men (who at times
emerge directly from out of the ground) roam the upper world to capture
its heroes and bring them to the Crocodile Queen, who uses a combination
of hypnotism and her female charms to make them their loveslaves - but why
?
Because she wants to conquer the upper world, silly, and without its
heroes, the upper world is defenseless.
One day, Banju Jagga stops by the wedding of Hidaloca and hero Sanjaya,
and despite fierce opposition by all the villagers and especially
Hidaloca, e is able to snatch Sanjaya - and kill all the villagers in the
process. Even hero Mandalla (Barry Prima), who just happens to be in the
neighbourhood, can do little more than at least save Hidaloca's life.
Then Mandalla is telepathically summoned by his master. It turns out
that Banju Jagga had been at his place too, and - together with a few
other bizarre baddies - had tried to force the secret hiding place of the
all-powerful Devil's Sword (which was cast out of a meteorite) out of him.
When the master refused to tell, Banju Jagga poisoned hm, and now, to save
his life, Mandalla has to amputate both his master's legs (!). As a thank
you, the master tells Mandalla where to find the sword ... in the Mountain
of the Sword (now I'm not sure, but isn't htis name a dead-giveaway
?).
Mandalla and Hidaloca ride to the mountain to fetch the sword, but in
order to do so, Mandalla has to first fight a monster. And after the sword
is already in his possession, he has to realize that Banju jagga has
followed them and has now taken Hidaloca hostage to exchange for the
sword. But the exchange doesn't quite work, and ultimately, Mandalla and
Hidaloca defeat Banju Jagga, who hightails it back to the Crocodile
Kingdom ... but the Crocodile Queen won't accept failure and throws him
into a fiery pit ... Eventually, Mandalla and Hidaloca make it to the
Crocodile Kingdom and try to face teh Crocodile Queen on her own turf ...
but before long, she has made Hidaloca her prisoner and Mandalla her
loveslave. It's only thanks to Mandalöla's master, who once again uses
his telepathic powers, that the Queen's spell over Mandalla can be broken,
he can in turn free Hidaloca, and the two can not merely defeat the
Crocodile Queen and cause her kingdon to crumble, they also find out her
secret, that her power is given to her by a crocodile statue, and once
that is shattered, she turns into an old hag, then even a crocodile ... Ah
yeah, and in the end, Hidaloca gets her Sanjaya back, while Mandalla rides
on to do more good elsewhere. Heroic fantasy, Indonesian style:
This is a film full of over-the-top, crazy ideas and of (sometimes
magical) martial arts to spice up a tried and true story. Unfortunately,
budgetary restraints, shoddy special effects, at times lame stuntwork, and
a not always inspired direction keep the film from showing its full
potential, but even the way it is, The Devil's Sword is good fun, a
fast-paced, mindless but inventive piece of heroic fantasy that is best
watched with beer and would make a perfect party flick.
