Zara (Naya Somanya) and Milan (Dominique Janelle) are housemates in
Philadelphia who try to navigate their way through their lives, together
and seperately. Zara feels torn between her high school sweetheart and her
current on-again-off again boyfriend (Augustus Taborn) and has to deal
with her bossy mother (Ada Simbo), her sickly father (Derrick M. Redmond)
and her hippie sister (Vanessa J. Hampton), Milan is a shopoholic who
suddenly loses her job and tries to make ends meet as a stripper and later
drug courier while suffering under her macho boyfriend (Brandon J.
McLean), and together the two women see their best friend and hairdresser
(Fatima Gamble) going off the deep end - so the two of them sure enough
don't get bored ... Now I will say this film feels a little choppy
and episodic at times, owed to the fact that it originally was a webseries
that grew to feature length only eventually - and that said, it could have
done with a little re-edit and re-shuffle for a more homogenous feel. That
out of the way though, this is a rather charming mix that's drama, comedy,
somance and slice-of-life story in equal measures, with two likeable leads
having relatable issues, and the two leads deliver fittingly likeable
performances, surrounded by a solid ensemble, all resulting in a film well
worth a watch. |
