About 500 years ago, 6 women were accused of being witches and brutally
tortured and killed in a small Italian village. The accusations were
completely false of course, but the rage the women felt somehow manifested
itself, and since then at all times 6 women of the village were trained in
black magic as those women's successors, patiently awaiting their day for
revenge. But maybe a dark force wants to achieve something much greater. Today,
Father Gabriele (Gerard Diefenthal) and Father Milio (Marco Di Stefano)
perform an exorcism ... that leaves the both of them deeply scarred,
Father Milio on the outside (he has almost been burned to a crisp, and it
shows), Father Gabriele on the inside (he almost loses his faith). Father
Milio though is the priest of the little parrish where above said-to-be
witches were burned all those centuries ago, and he does notice something
evil going on, so he calls upon Father Gabriele for help, and the two of
them soon find a door to hell wide open (figuratively) - problem is,
Father Milio might not be all he's supposed to be but in league with
something way more sinister ... Darkside Witches might
not be the most original horror movie, neither the best-written one, and
it's not all that well-structured either ... but if you're at all into
Italian genre fodder from the 1980s (and to be honest, who isn't, at least
secretly), you will find this as a perfect continuation of mediterranean
old school horror: Sure, the story doesn't always make sense and features
a few too many non-sequiturs, but the feeling of unease is always there,
the shocks and effects may be a bit on the crude side, but they are always
effective, and just like Lucio
Fulci's Gothic Trilogy (which Darkside Wtiches rather
clearly does refer to), this film is just damned good at disorienting its
audience with very creepy effect! So no, definitely not a perfect film
... but one that will very probably creep you out - and if you're a horror
fan, this is anything but a bad thing.
