Christophe (Valentin Bonhomme) and Céline's (Claire Suchet)
relationship has seen better days to be sure, their romance is by and
large gone, and the fact that they both have affairs is only a result of
this - and yet they make a last ditch effort to save what once was love: A
hike to some obscure caves in the middle of the wilderness, far away from
all civilisation with no cellphone signal, no nothing. It's only when
night falls and there are no artificial lights around, no soothing car
noises, that Céline notices how much nature upsets her, how much she's a
total citygirl. And after a few hours of darkness, she starts hearing
things, like screams for help and a child crying. At first Christophe
thinks it's only in her imagination - until he starts to hear all of this
as well ... The Darkest is based on a pretty archaic and
at the same time pretty fresh concept: Let the dark as such, one of the
key ingredients of horror in the first place, do the trick and freak
people out rather than go for spectacle - and for the most part, this
works even, as the screen remaining black paired with an eerie soundscape
works great to build up a creepy atmosphere, as it forces the audience to
fill in the blanks. And even later, the sparing use of light in the mose
action-based scenes keeps the mood intact. Unfortunately though, the
filmmakers seem to have lost courage in the third act and start to explain
everything away, and come up with a disappointingly esoteric way to do so
in the process. It's still a powerful enough shocker for genre fans to
enjoy - but less would have been more!
