Samuel (Robert Pattinson), accompanied by his miniature horse
Butterscotch, sets out west to find his fiancee Penelope (Mia Wasikowska),
who has been kidnapped to somewhere in the middle of nowhere. And since he
wants to not only save her but to also marry her on the spot, he brings
Parson Henry (David Zellner) with him, without being too peculiar by what
right that town drunk actually calls himself a parson. And even if Samuel
and Henry seem to be unfitted for the rough terrain they're covering, and
make a very unlikely couple to begin with, they master all the odds and
make it to a little cabin where Penelope's supposed to be held, shoot her
captor dead ... and then it becomes apparent that Penelope hasn't been
kidnapped at all but was living there with the guy she loved (whom they
shot), and if she couldn't stand Samuel before, she positively hates him
now. Which drives Samuel, being robbed of his delusions, to go and shoot
himself dead - and this is where all hell breaks loose ...
When it comes to violence, Damsel isn't a movie that
cares to hold back - but at the same time it's also pretty darn funny and
pretty clever, playing with alost standardized narrative structures as
well as blurring the lines between good and evil, right and wrong. And
it's all carried by a top notch cast playing very colourful characters,
packed into breathtaking scenery - making up for a pretty great movie for
sure!
