1955: Harry (Geert Hunaerts), age 12, has romantic views aout love, mainly
nurtured by what he saw in the movies. But his slightly older best friend
(Michael Pas) sees love more as a good fuck, & he makes about every effort
to initiate his friend too, be it on a merry-go-round at an amusement park, or
wto fuck the passed out, sensual mother of one of Harry's schoolmates. None
of this does work out though, but at least he can teach Harry about
masturbation. 1962: Harry (now plyed by Josse De Pauw) has just graduated but
is plagued by a terrible case of acne, which makes him pretty much repulsing to
all the girls, even horny Marina (Doriane Moretus), who lets pretty much
everyone eles have a go. It is only when he bandages his face (with toilet
paper) at the school dance does he manage to ask lovely Lisa (An van Essche)
for a dance ... & she gives in. But knowing she only agreed because he hid
himself, he gets royally drunkt that night ... & what's more, gets arrested
because he & a friend have stolen some liquor from a freight-train ... 1976:
Harry & his best friend Bill (Amid Chakir) meet after Bill has just gotten
out of prison, & they get royally drunk, & in their state of drunkennes
decide to a) steal a corpse from a hearse, just for fun & b) break into a
house (with the corpse) to use up its liquor supply ... At one point though
Harry has the idea to take a closer look at the corpse they were carying with
them, & sees it's a beautiful young woman, & he, still a very repressed
man, decides to fuck her, which is too much even for drunk Bill. But Harry has
grown really fond of the young dead girl, & in the end, as an act of love,
he drowns himself, & her with him, in the see ... Though this
might be a strange thing to say about any Chalres Bukowski-adaptation, this is
actually a lovely romantic comedy, almost to the point of being heartwarming
... & it's not bad either, because though all of Bukowski's usual
perversions (including necrophilia) & a big dose of alcoholism are there,
everything was fitted into a comprehensive plot, part coming-of-age-story, part
romance that tries to make the audience understand the climax (the fucking of a
dead girl) rather than present it as sensationalist yet hollow centerpiece ...
which in itself is quite an achievement.
