Mike (Chris Schwartz) suddenly finds himself in the crawlspace beneath
his own weekend home and has no recollection how he got there (at least
not at first, later he figures he must have been drugged). Problem is,
Mike also finds out that he is locked up down here, and locked up with two
mummified corpses, too. And there's a guy outside watching him calling
himself the Director, who has set up all sorts of death traps for
Mike and who trets him like the contestant of a reality show ... a reality
show about survival. Eventually, Mike is given a phone to call a friend,
Ryan (Jason Hastings) to come save him ... only for Ryan to be brutally
shot dead upon his arrival. Then Mike is handed a gun and actually given a
chance to shoot the Director, but at the same time the crawlspae is filled
with car exhaust gasses, and his only chance for survival is shooting a
hole into the
gaspipe - and of course, Mike only has one bullet. Then the crawlspace's
floor is filled with water and then electrified - which sure keeps Mike
jumping. Finally, the Director himself pays a visit to Mike to give him
a chance to fight it out one-on-one ... and though the director thinks he
has gotten the upper hand, he has forgotten one electric chord that Mike
uses to electrocute him, then finally making it out of the crawlspace ...
but will the Director stay with him forever? An interesting
concept (even though it's slightly reminiscent of Shinya Tsukamoto's Haze)
and quite a few creepy scenes probably don't make The Crawlspace a
perfect film ... but at least a valiant effort: Where the film succeeds in
creepiness, it lacks in suspense, and while the concept is great, the plot
as such is just a little too episodic to be wholly convincing. Still,
the film is totally watchable, even good, and is proof of the incredible
potential that can (occasionally) be found in no budget shot-on-video
filmmaking.
