While Steve (Jack Davenport) wants to break up with his egocentric
girlfriend Jane (Gina Bellman), but she refuses to give in to his demand
& rather seduces him on a public toilet, Susan (Sarah Alexander)
breaks up with her boyfriend Patrick (Ben Miles) rather by accident,
only to meet Steven in the restrooms when he just steps out of his &
Jane's toilet cabin to get some condoms. & though he acts more than
a bit strange, she is immediately attracted to him (& he to her),
& soon they decide to go out on a date. Unfortunately, once on the
date in a restaurant the next day, they have to discover they are not
alone: Jane, who can't accept Steve's breaking up with her, as does
Patrick, who hasn't lost any time to date Susan's best friend Sally (Kate
Isitt), & then there's also Steve's best friend & Susan's
colleague Jeff (Richard Coyle), who is a bit strange to say the least,
& who wants to prevent Susan from telling Steve he once fainted when
he & Susan were about to have sex at any cost (he fails of course).
It all ends with Susan showing her bare right breast to all the others
in the restaurant ("Please note that this breast is ironically
intended"). Often compared with the popular American
sitcom Friends, Coupling has actually little to do with
that show other than it is about 3 young men & 3 young women, some
of whom are sometimes romantically entangled with each other. Actually,
in direct comparison, Coupling would win over the American show,
as it is much more frank with sexual topics a show in conservative
tv-network-America can only hint at, & its humour is of that dry
brand that can only come out of Britain. A great ensemble cast that
handles that humour to perfection further elevates the show's quality. By
the way, in 2003 someone in America saw it fit to make an American of
the show (Why ? It can't be because of the language-barrier ?). Though I
haven't seen that show, I'm not prepared to even give it the benefit of
the doubt.
