Susan (Sarah Alexander), Sally (Kate Isitt) & Jane (Gina Bellman) enter
the bar, Susan to meet her boyfriend Steve (Jack Davenport) from who she's
pregnant, Jane to meet her blind date, who she thinks is her gynaecologist,
& Sally to meet her boyfriend Patrick (Ben Miles) ... who out of the blue
tells her he has to go to Portugal for a golfing trip - in 5 minutes. She tries
to talk him out of it, even promises him sex, but it's no use. Depressed, Sally
beats down an innocent bystander who just happens to hold flowers ... & all
of a sudden Patrick tells her he has rethought his decision & will go for
the sex ... NOW. Rewind 9 1/2 minutes: the girls enter the bar, Susan meets
Steve & they discuss their relationship problems ... that he doesn't fancy
her anymore since he knows about her pregnancy, & he can't even adress
childbirth by its proper name, calls it (in homage to Alien) the John
Hurt-Moment. Jane introduces her blind date Oliver (Richard Mylan) to them,
presumably a gynaecologist, but when Susan & Steve discuss Steve's
inability to adress childbirth by its proper name, Oliver claims that Alien
was the movie that inspired him to his line of work ... All of a sudden though
Susan has an idea of how to make herself attractive to Steve again &
promises him she'd win him back with one snog ... Rewind 9 1/2 minutes: the
girls enter the bar. Jane meets her blind date, who turns out not to be her
gynaecologist after all but Oliver, a sci-fi-bookstore owner. She tries
desperately to get rid of him & asks Susan to take him off her shoulders -
but Susan is pretty much put off when she, assuming Oliver's a gynaecologist,
offers him to spread her legs for him, only to then find out his true
profession, so she lets Jane & Oliver go ... until she has an idea, &
all of a sudden grabs Jane & kisses her passionately. Oliver - feeling left
out - meanwhile remembers the flowers Patrick asked him to hand Sally in
Patrick's name, but no sooner has he picked them up, she beats him down. But
Patrick - being very turned on by the girls kissing - redecides about his
holiday plans & asks Sally for sex ... NOW. & Steve, who has always
been turned on by a little lesbianism, tells Susan that "... John Hurt has
left the building." Despite the sad fact that with the fourth
season, Richard Coyle (as everyone's favourite Jeff) has left the regular cast
of Coupling, & Richard Mylan just doesn't work that well as
substitute, this is a very funny episode, especially thanks to its non-linear
storytelling, instead telling the story subsequently in 3 simultaneously
happening, intertwining subplots, that only when put together paint the whole
picture. Coupling, by the way, has made several attempts at
non-linear storytelling in past episodes (which is rather unusual for sitcoms),
the funniest possibly being The
Woman with the 2 Breasts.
