Ethan (Michael Kopelow) and his partner Ceil (Alice Rietveld) are
pretty much on the verge of inventing a teleporter, but after a few failed
tests (despite analysis identifies them as surefire successes), Ethan
decides to try the device on himself when left alone in the laboratory ...
and if you think Cronenberg's The Fly
now, you're totally right ONLY up to here, because this is where the
similarities end: Ethan's teleportation experiment turns out to be a total
success ... but it has also transported him half a year into the future,
and now his lab belongs to the company he has once ditched, he finds
himself on the run from pretty much everybody, he finds out that he is
said to have killed both his wife (Devon Ogden) and his sister (Kerry
Knuppe) - and apparently, in the time he has been absent from it all he
seems to have been pretty busy. Fortunately, Ethan gets hold of Ceil, and
the two figure they must have accidently invented a time machine. So now,
to straighten everything out again, Ethan decides to go back in time to
the point where he has left, to set things right again, but unfortunately,
there's an conspiracy going on initiated by his former boss (Frank Simms),
and just going back in time once doesn't solve anything - so Ethan goes
back more than once, finding out more and more in the process, but also
making things more complicated, also by at times standing in his own way.
And whatever he does, the outcome remains bloody ... Now of
course, the premise of this film isn't entirely original, besides
above-mentioned The Fly one probably
has seen tons of plot elements of this movie in countless time travel
films ... but while the concept might sound overly familiar, the execution
is really fresh, approaching the film's topic with the right portion of
humour without ever becoming really silly, and the story full of fine
plottwists that really fit the narrative and make good use of the time
travel theme, even in standard situations like chase scenes. Plus for a
change, the time travel aspect of the film seems to have been really
thought through for a change, of course not from a scientific but from a
logical point of view. And add to that some really well-paced
storytelling, actors who fit their characters in all their unlikeliness
and give fine performances, and a general all throughout fun feeling, and
you've got yourself a pretty good movie!
