Robert (Pau Masó), a recovering alcoholic with partial amnesia,
returns to Budapest from a stint at rehab - and pretty much immediately
breaks up with his boyfriend Christian (Sindre Bergfall) and starts seeing
Hugo (Matthew Crawley), a guy he has met over a dating app. Now this has
Robert's best friends (Sian Abrahams, Fraser Fraser) worried, as they know
he's very unstable, and also knows next to nothing about Hugo, but Hugo's
very manipulative, and despite him often having random outbursts of rage
and violence, he makes Robert stick with him, and eventually persuades him
to accompany him to his cabin in the country for a romantic weekend. Only,
the weekend doesn't get nearly as romantic as planned, at first the fact
that Robert and Hugo don't really know each other painfully shows and they
get into an argument, then Hugo forces himself on Robert and pretty much
rapes him. But things get from bad to worse when Robert finds out he has
formerly been a pornstar (a fact his amnesia has kept from him) and it
might just be a fetish of Hugo to have sex with him, so all the talk about
a long-term relationship has probably been a lie. But things go really
bad when it turns out Hugo's intentions are even more sinister ... A
pretty cool, very slowburn thriller, that actually starts out more as a
story about love gone wrong and only eventually leans more and more
towards the dark side of things - which works pretty well here, as this
really puts one into the shoes of the film's protagonist who's about as
clueless as the audience in regards to things to come. And thanks to a
directorial effort that has a hand for beautifully arranged imagery
(somewhat akin to giallo movies of old) and for creating an atmosphere of
slight unease without giving anything away prior to the story's needs,
this has become a very tense movie that's sure to entertain the dedicated
thriller fan.
