Community college is the ideal institution for Chino (Jordan McSorley),
Rod (Jim Dean), Jonny 300 (Jon Dean) and Herby (Tommy Avallone) -
basically because there's little pressure on them, nobody really expects
them to succeed, and thus they can always find an excuse to skip class and
go drinking. In their favourite bar, they somehow always manage to drink
for free, but then the barman Smutty (Mike Hadfield) tells them his boss
plans to close the joint. So the four friends and Smutty decide to make an
effort to raise $10,000 to save and take over the place ... just to
continue to drink for free. But initial efforts to raise the funds are ...
well, less than successful - after all, who's buying some DIY lemonade
from a bunch of college dudes when the elementary schooler (Erica Mabry)
sells already pressed lemonade and is much cuter anyways? So a severed
head (Albert DiGiacomo) in a box tells them (!) the one way to raise the
money is to finish college and receive monetary gifts from all sorts of
relatives ... weirdly enough, that makes sense ... but can our quartet of
losers do it? And if not, what's plan B? And how does a hypnotist (Michael
Bower) and a self-proclaimed supervillain (Chad Crenny) fit into the
story? Community College is an at times hilarious
comedy, and its basic concept, if a bit feeble, is at the same time quite
lovable and honest. Add to this a few truly bizarre ideas (a talking
severed head, a self-proclaimed supervillain, ...), and you've got
yourself - well, unfortunately not a perfect film, basically because its
narrative buildup and pacing are a bit off, and the main characters remain
a bit too flat to come across as truly compelling. That said though, a
film about guys trying to get free drinks should best be consumed with
(preferably free) drinks - which by pure definition makes it a perfect
party movie, right? Right!
