Bill (Tom Michaels) buys himself enough food and wine for a romantic
dinner for two - even though he knows he's to eat alone as he has ever
since his girlfriend has left him. On his way home he stumbles across
Joanna (Jade Warwick), whose car has broken down - and it's nothing that
Bill can help her with, but at least he can offer her a roof over the head
for the night, and he has somebody to have dinner with after all. And
after initial reservations, Joanna comes to believe Bill might actually be
just a nice guy and accepts hiis invitation. Heck, she even goes so far as
to wear a (very flattering) dress of his ex for the occasion, and rather
unexpectedly the two of them end up in his bedroom together after dinner -
when out of the blue Bill's ex shows up, and she's not happy ...
Now one thing up front, this short takes quite a number of hints from
Psycho in both style and
story, to the point where the ending doesn't come quite as surprisingly as
intended. but then again, borrowing from
Psycho means borrowing from the
best, and it's not that Before the Nightfall doesn't have
its own merits as well, from its subtle yet genre-savvy direction to its
effective camerawork to its strong cast, all of which help to make this a
very enjoyable genre miniature. |
