It's another of these New Zealand-lensed TV shows by Sam
Raimi & Rob Tapert, who also gave you the Evil Dead-movies,
Darkman (movie & series), Hercules: Legendary
Journeys & Xena: Warrior Princess, which isn't really saying anything.
This is about a striptease
dancer (Jennifer Sky) cryogenically frozen in 2001 awakening in 2525
& finding herself in the middle of a war between man (or woman, that
is) & machine (here called "the bailies"), when machine
actually has the upper hand, having driven man to the underground. Luckily upon
her awakening she finds herself with 2 scantily clad female freedom fighters,
Hel (Gina Torres) - who is give pointers from a computer voice (hence
called Voice) in her head - & Sarge (Victoria Pratt) whom she teams up with ...
This might be best described as a cross of Buck Rogers & Charlie's
Angels & has all the campy ingredients & cheap plastic
outfits that made Xena so funny & so bad at the same time,
but at least the show (at least the first season) is only half an hour
long, some initial episodes are actually fast paced & don't take
themselves too serious - some lines
of Sky are actually quite funny (& intended to be so). Also, the
action, far from being great, isn't half bad either (& that's more than you
get from most other US-TV-shows). After a while, the show did take a
downhill turn though, giving every overused sci-fi cliche a cheap &
cheesy treatment, & relying considerably on equally bad Marvel-comics
- that co-producer Sam Raimi did direct Spiderman in 2002 fits
the picture perfectly. |
