Naive and insecure Nirma's (Mithila Palkar) world's in shambles after
her car got stolen, and it soon becomes painfully obvious that the police
won't do a thing. But a criminal she meets at the police station gives her
advice - she's to call Artist (Abhay Deol), who's a master chef but also
some sort of crime kingpin who every now and again does favours to people
he likes. And Artist soon takes a liking to Nirma, as behind her insecure
facade he sees massive potential. So he takes her in and tries everything
to awaken this potential - with some success. Eventually, Artist finds out
that Nirma's car has been stolen by Fayyaz (Vijay Raaz) - and will
probably be stripped and sold to foreign buyers. Now Fayyaz is one of the
most violent gangsters of the city, but he has a weakness: Goat-fighting.
And this season he has the best goat there is, so he'll do nothing to
anger the goat, and when the goat chooses Nirma's car as its favourite
sleeping spot, the car isn't stripped after all but becomes home to a
goat. Nirma's more than happy to have found all that out, but how to get
the car back from Fayyaz? Why, by taking his goat hostage of course ... Chopsticks
is a somewhat charming comedy - that just tries to hard to be quirky. As a
consequence, everything suffers a bit, the narrative flow, the character
arcs, and even the comedic bits: Everything just seems slightly forced
instead of naturally grown. Not that there aren't any good ideas in the
film, in fact there are quite a few, but the film just doesn't feel
properly assembled. On the plus side though, Mithila Palkar does give a
very likeable performance that makes one root for her, it's just that not
everything else lives up to this.
