Small town USA, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of teh totally artificial "Satanic panic" of the early 1990s when it was tried to push the blame of everything wrong with society on heavy metal music: Travis (Joel Meyers) is a misunderstood teenager in his final year of hifh school who has hi8s fair share of problems, none of whicdh have to do with his prediliection for heavy metal though. One day in photography class he meets Stacey (Helen Laser) who's troubled like him, but they share their love for taking pictures, so eventually they go on picture taking safaris together, taking some wuite striking images - but also stumbling on a room  that has them split personalities and let their worst (and most homicidal) self to the fore. So soon Travis brutally attacks the school jock (Lyon Hamill) who has bullied him time and again over the years, and Stacey beats her abusive dad (Rick Kain) halfway to death - and they find themselves on the run, especially since it isn't long before Travis is accused of four murders (he didn't commit) as we3ll. And there's only one cop (Hollis Fox) on their side  who has long given up subscribing to Satanic panic. But will this be enough in a small-minded community like this?

Now Carry the Darkness is quite possibly the best depiction of teenage angst in quite some time, especially since its plot doesn't only cleverly st the theme at the center of a horror story, but the story also cleverly features its symptoms and accompanying effects like alienation, pressure to conformity and lack of understanding from even your peers. And that the story works really well in the horror realm is thanks to a clerer script, a subtle directorial effort and a robust cast. all making this film a pleasant genre ride.
