It seems that this year Sunnydale High's prom & the Day of the
Apocalypse - when head vampire The Master (Mark Metcalf) will finally break
free of his underground prison, walk the earth & open the Hellmouth - will
fall on the same day .... & I'm not sure which is worse.
Anyways, according to some prophecy Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), mentor of
Buffy, Vampire Slayer (Sarah Michelle Gellar), has dug up, Buffy has to die
that night, too, which leaves her understandably miffed, & she decides to
quit the job. It is only after she sees death coming ever closer to those close
to her that she decides to reassume her responsibilities, & soon she goes
down to the Master's underground lair ... & he kills her.
Thank god though Xander (Nicholas Brendon) - who is secretly in love with
Buffy - has forced the mysterious good-guy-vampire Angel (David Boreanaz) to lead him to the
Master's underground lair as well, where he can give Buffy mouth-to-mouth
recuscitation - & just in time, too, as not only is the Master walking the earth
freely & his vampire hordes wander Sunnydale, also the Hellmouth - actually
a three-headed & tentacled monster, not at all unlike the one from Little
Shop of Horrors - has manifested itself inside the school library, where
all of Buffy's helpers in her fight against vampirism - that being Giles &
Willow (Alyson Hannigan) as well as newcomers to the club Ms Calendar (Robia
LaMorte) & Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) - have barricaded themselves in.
But Buffy was only strengthened by her close brush with death, & this
time she can kill the Master for good - & with him, all his vampires &
the Hellmouth disappear ... & then, it's off to the prom.
Andrew J.Ferchland has another utterly pointless appearance as the Anointed
One, something like a childlike successor of the Master, but he disappears
halfway through the story.
This finale of season 1 of Buffy neatly ties up most of the story-arcs -
except for the annoying Anointed One-arc, that reaches well into season 2 -
& manages to stay reasonably successful throughout, even though some of the
more tragic aspects of the story tend to get rather cheesy when they are
supposed to be emotional & the comedic aspects of the series do
unfortunately take back seat.
The running joke of almost everyone (including the Master) at one point or
another mentioning to Buffy "I like your outfit" - meaning her prom
dress - does lighten up the proceedings though.
