With the surrender of Japan, World War II is over ... but how was poor
Buster (Buster Keaton) to know that, marooned in a lifeboat in the wide
open sea ?
Eventually Buster's boat hits land, and for some reason he figures he
must be in Japan and gives himself up to the local authorities as a
prisoner of war. The authorities though think he is the infamous
Bluebeard, an US-American wifekiller who reportedly fled to Mexico, and as
the local jail's most prominent prisoner, Buster gets loyal treatment.
In the meantime, the local rocket scientist has finished his work on a
rocket that's supposed to go to the moon, but he can't find any volunteers
to fly it ... so he has Buster and his cellmate abducted from the prison
and now he forces them into the rocket to go on the lengthy trip - on
which they are accidently accompanied by the scientist's daughter ...
Not all goes as planned though and the rocket ship lands a mere few
hundred yards away from where it had started. Buster and his cellmate
think they are on the moon though and promptly give themselves up to the
local authorities, only the girl soon recognizes her hometown and clears
up the situation. And as an added bonus, Buster is cleared of all charges
of being Bluebeard after the real Bluebeard has been found.
A sad low in Buster Keaton's career: A very unfunny comedy filmed in
Mexico on the cheap that features a childishly silly plot and a
disappointingly flat direction, and by and large, the film is lacking any
setpieces tht made his earlier and better films so special - even if his
timing is still spot-on, as he ably proves in his few slapstick routines.
Rather not watch it !
