A year ago, when staying at Josh's (Paul McGann) b&b, Marc (Tom
Bateman) and Fred (Sean Teale) were refused a double bed just because they
were a gay couple while Josh was a devout Christian. Since then, Marc has
sued Josh, actually won ... and since Marc is something of a sore winner,
he and Fred come back to Josh's b&b just so Marc can rub it right in -
and is in for a bit of a defeat as Josh has since removed all double beds
from his b&b, so on the grounds of equality nobody having a double
bed, whether straight or hetero, married (like Marc and Fred) or unmarried
is treated alike - as in NO double bed. However, Marc soon finds out that
Josh's teenaged son Paul (Callum Woodhouse) is actually gay, and he
ponders about using that fact to torture their host with ... when a
Russian appears at the place who doesn't speak any English but whose fixed
stare seems to spell gay basher in broad letters, and his many rune-like
tattoos don't make things much better. However, Paul seems to be drawn to
him, and even shows him to some local cruising areas. This has especially
Fred concerned who has tagged along with Marc out of love and not out of
spite for Josh, and now perceives lives shattered based on what might and
might not happen. And all of this culminates in tragedy and ultimately
murder - but this murder is where the problems only start ... Of
course, most people will identify B&B mostly with its gay
content, and probably judge it based on that - which is a shame, as the
film is just a really well-written thriller that really manages to build
up suspense the old-fashioned (but still very effective) way, and that's
carried by some well fleshed-out characters and first rate performances,
set in suitably atmospheric locations. And the ending will definitely
surprise one! Totally worth a look!
