The Baxters are pretty much the perfect family, father Henry's (Mark
Brombacher) successful in his job, mother Alice's (Hélene Robbie) the
perfect homemaker with a passion and a talent for making cookies, and
daughter Peyton (Vivien Shepherd) and son Hunter (Preston Norris) are
hardly troublemakers given they're in their teens. Of course, such a
family just has to have a dark secret, like that Alice is the descendent
of a long line of witches, and she puts all her black magic into her
cookies that have made her husband a success at what he does in the first
place. Problem is, a key element of these cookies is human blood, drawn
from a live human, and since humans aren't very likely to give up their
blood freely, Henry has to go on the occasional manhunt - and he's good at
hiding his tracks ...
These days, Peyton feels her hormones acting up, and when Chad (LJ
Beaupré), the coolest guy in school, asks her over, she's overly eager
and puts all her efforts into seducing him. Too bad then that Chad has a
girlfriend, Casey (Jessica Chin King), whose idea this date was to
brutally prank Peyton - a prank that black magic can't make undone all
that easily ...
Sure, the idea of the "perfect family" holding a
dark secret might not exactly be new anymore, but writer/director/star
Mark Brombacher knows how to bring it across with plenty of wit, a
definite sense for black humour and also a feel for the horror genre. But
what makes this short is that it's not just a punchline-a-minute laughfest
but also has a dramatic backbone to make the darker aspects of the story
work. And carried by an able cast, the story comes to life rather
beautifully and makes for pretty cool genre entertainment.
