They were just surburban housewives until very recently, with their
petty problems, sneaky affairs and perfect but also pointless lives
... and suddenly, Kara (Kerry Finlayson), Kate (Helen Soraya) and pregnant
Lucy (Christy Lee Hughes) find themselves on the run from zombies - and
their male companion Danny (Don Donnelly) doesn't prove much of a
"protector", losing them in the woods at the first possible
opportunity. It doesn't take Kara long to lose both Kate and Lucy (and
even Lucy's zombie baby) either, but she's a fighter - plus she has an
agenda, she wants to save her sister who has caught the zombie virus. However,
finding a cure for the virus is a whole other agenda, as the town's mayor
(David Alen Smith) is an ignorant prick who prefers to keep the story
under wraps and the reputation of the city intact to calling in
specialists and the national guard. And the local doctor, trying to find a
cure on his own, loses himself in delusions of grandeur while being
totally oblivious to the fact that he is slowly turning into a zombie,
too. There are rumours that the infection has originated from the local
witchdoctor (Myles Cranford), who lives out somewhere in the woods, but
all the local yokels come up with based on this information is to form a
small lynchmob ... well, it doesn't end well for them - but will it end
well for anybody? Blood Rush is most certainly one of
the most original contemporary indie zombie movies out there, basically
because of its fresh approach to its subject matter. Now sure, it does
feature all the gruesomeness, all the running and hiding, all the tension
and suspense one associates with the genre, but coupled with a
surprisingly light-footed approach and comical edges that never border the
moronic. Plus, the film really relies on its characters that are not your
usual zombie movie action guys but a believable and likeable mix of
everyday people. Definitely worth a look!
