Much to the dismay of hacker-genius Avon (Paul Darrow), Roj Blake
(Gareth Thomas) plan to take his spaceship Liberator plus crew - besides
these two Jenna (Sally Knyvette), Vila (Michael Keating) & the giant Gan (David
Jackson) - to Sorian Major in order to destroy one of the Federation's
communications complexes that makes the planet a nerve center for the
Federation. On their way there however they pick up a small spacecraft
carrying a few aliens (Tony Smart, Mark McBride, Frank Henson)
sleeping in cryogenic chambers, & promptly decide to wake
them up. Then though Blake, Avon & Vila go down to the planet to
make contact with the resistance & blow the communications complex
up, while Jenna & Gan stay aboard the ship to look after things,
&, more improtantly, teleport them back aboard should need arise. You
can possibly guess what happens next already, but I will tell you
nevertheless: The aliens awake & turn out to be brutal murderers,
soon attacking Jenna & Gan - who thanks to a brainimplant is unable
to kill his adversaries - while Blake & crew on the planet run into
a tight spot together with Cally (Jan Chappell), sole survivor of the
resistance forces. & while they desperately need to be beamed up,
with the planet only minutes away from explosion, Jenna & Gan have a
battle of their own on their hands. Needless to say, both problems end
in a bang, & the crew comes out safe & sond, with Cally staying
aboard as the 6th crewmember (or 7th, if you count Zen, the eccentric
& mysterious ship's computer - hence Blake's 7). Unfortunately,
this episode gives away its story & solution way too soon to
maintain tension & suspense over the whole running time (on the
other hand though, Alien, released one year later, had a very similar
plot & structure - even giving away much of the story at an early
point, too, but manages to stay suspensefull throughout). That said,
it's still an entertaining if not terribly special episode. And, the
boots Jenna wears are just priceless ! |
