Killer Shrews

review by
Mike Haberfelner

It should have been a comparatively quiet evening at Professor Perry's (Jonathan Rogers) as he was to present his book with his PR agent Lewis (Marcus Ganci-Rotella), Lewis' girlfriend Cassandra (Cheryl Szynczak) and B-movie starlet Fiona (Elizabeth Houlihan) ... until Dr. Murdock (Mick O'Keefe), the neighbourhood mad scientist, stumbles in, all bloodied and everything, and claims to have been attacked by killer shrews - apparently he has experimented with ... well, stuff, and instead of curing rabies he has created man-sized shrews that are ... well, killers, too. And it soon becomes apparent that the professor's house is not only under siege, the shrews have actually found a way in, so they all, with the help of Sheriff Blake (Bill Kennedy) and deputy Wayne (Baird Hageman) try to make it to town for some help and to warn the populace, but there are quite a few shrews around so the mission experiences many a setback and the shrews make it to town before our heroes. Eventually, the army moves in, but they seem to find no cure for the shrews-problem, so the president decides to nuke the town - and now our heroes have a real problem at hand if they want to get out alive ...

As the title already suggests, this is a reworking of 1959's The Killer Shrews with definite parodistic purposes: As the original film, this one was done on a shoestring and with not totally convincing special effects - and to be honest, sometimes the lack of quality with the creature effects is a bit too obvious in this movie. But that said, the film's still tons of fun as the cast is quite obviously in on the joke, the audience is in on the joke, and even if the plot's intentionaly formulaic, it still holds quite a few surprises that do get lots of laughs out of one. In all, it's probably best watched with a couple of mates and at least as many beers, as it really offers itself to being a great party movie!
