Ash's (Bruce Campbell) new-found daughter Brandy (Arielle
Carver-O'Neill) wants to go to her school's dance to find out whether Ruby Knowby (Lucy
Lawless) is really the villainess Ash makes her out to be or the caring
school counselor she has come to know over the years - and Ash thinks
that's a great idea, as he and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) can wait in the
wings and this way get close enough to Ruby to kill her. What Ash doesn't
know is that Kelly is actually possessed by a demon, and Ruby wants to use
the dance as an opportunity to turn Brandy against Ash and ultimately kill
him. So during the dance, she has her own offspring turn into Ash's double
and have him chainsaw his way through all the students to prove to Brandy
what a bad man her father is, then she has her confront the real Ash
without Brandy knowing about the swap - but what she hasn't counted on is
that it's a lot harder for Brandy to kill anyone, let alone someone who
cares for her, than it ought to be on paper. And eventually Ruby gives her
game away, convincing Brandy that her dad was right all along - and she
even takes a dagger in her back Ruby has aimed at Ash ...
There's massive carnage and gallons of blood in this one, and
it sure has its funny moments, but ultimately the episode doesn't 100%
fall together, basically because on one hand the whole premise is too
far-fetched, on the other the horror and humour doesn't fall together
quite as well as in the best entries of the series. And Ash is too much in
straight hero mode to really entertain. That said, this one's still pretty
entertaining, but doesn't live up to the show's past glories.
