It appears Ash's (Bruce Campbell) hometown is under attack of a giant
monster now - and so is really the rest of the world -, and somehow Ash is
the only one who can stop it. But first, he and Pablo (Ray Santiago) and
Ash's daughter Brandy (Arielle
Carver-O'Neill) have to get to the rift to get their dead friend Kelly's (Dana DeLorenzo)
so they can bring her back to life - which despite a walk through the
sewers and a deadite attack, proves to be only a minor inconvenience. In
the meantime, the army have started to evacuate town as they want to nuke
the monster - bad idea as this would only make it stronger. So Ash sends
all his friends with the army and gives them a hero's farewell, then
snatches a tank and drives it into the monster, to at the opportune time
shoot the Kandarian dagger into its mouth - which blows up the monster and
knocks out Ash ... who only awakens again decades into the future, when
the world's a wasteland - but on the plus side, there are still Sumerian
Knights around who worship him as the Chosen One ... Now I'm
always a sucker for giant monsters, and truth to be told, the creature
shown here is pretty cool. The problem is, this is a season finale, yet
giant monsters have never been set up and give a very "monster of the
week" feel to it. Also, despite the monster being giant, the stakes
don't seem all that high, as Ash really manages to kill the monster
exactly like he knew he would at first try, and likewise other than a few
deadite attacks, there's little challenge in bringing Kelly back. And
Ash's hero's farewell comes off as totally cheesy, something the series
would have made fun of in earlier seasons. And despite a spot of
self-doubt that really feels fake, Ash once again is presented as the
straight-as-an-arrow hero rather than the loveably fallible creature he
once was. On the plus side there are some really good laughs in this one,
it's just a shame the series as a whole didn't get a better finale than
this one.
